About the Role
We’re looking for a mid-weight User-Centred Designer to join BetterGov and help shape services that genuinely meet user needs and deliver better outcomes across the public sector. This is a remote UK based role offering a salary of £45,000 to £55,000, with occasional travel to client sites as required. The role requires Security Check (SC) clearance, or eligibility to obtain it, giving you the opportunity to work on a variety of impactful projects across government and public services.
This role will support the Lead UCD and Research team in the design, testing and delivery of user centred services, primarily across the Defence pillar.
You will be involved throughout the design lifecycle, from research planning and usability testing through to wireframing, prototyping, design systems and stakeholder engagement.
This is an excellent opportunity for a User Centred Designer looking to further develop their experience within complex public sector and Defence environments.
What you’ll do within our teams
User Centred Design
- Create user flows, wireframes and interactive prototypes
- Support service mapping and journey mapping activities
- Contribute to design system maintenance and component documentation
- Produce design artefacts suitable for delivery teams and stakeholders
- Ensure designs align with GDS and accessibility principles
User Research Support
- Assist with discussion guide creation
- Support participant recruitment and screener development
- Help facilitate usability testing sessions
- Analyse findings and contribute to insight reports
- Work closely with researchers to translate findings into design improvements
Delivery and Collaboration
- Work within agile multidisciplinary teams
- Participate in sprint ceremonies and planning activities
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Researchers, Developers and Service Designers
- Support backlog refinement and ticket creation
- Maintain design documentation and decision logs
Design Systems and Prototyping
- Create and maintain Figma components and libraries
- Contribute to scalable design systems
- Produce low, medium and high fidelity prototypes
- Support design handover activities
- Ensure consistency across products and services
Essential experience you will need to demonstrate
- Approximately 4 to 5 years experience in User-centred Design, or UX, UI
- Strong Figma skills including component libraries, Auto Layout, variables and prototyping
- Experience producing user flows, wireframes, prototypes and design specifications
- Experience supporting user research activities
- Experience creating discussion guides and participant screeners
- Experience supporting orfacilitatingusability testing sessions
- Understanding of accessibility principles and WCAG 2.2 AA
- Experience working within Agile delivery teams
- Experience using Jira and Confluence
Desirable experience which will be beneficial
- Experience working within Defence, Government or highly regulated environments
- Security Clearance, SC
- Knowledge of GDS Service Standards
- Experience contributing to service blueprints and operational design
- Experience with content design principles
- Experience working alongside developers during delivery
- Understanding of design systems at scale
