This year BetterGov will be fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity.
If nothing changes, one in two of us will be directly affected by dementia – either by developing the condition ourselves, caring for someone with it, or both. Currently there are no treatments available on the NHS to slow, stop or prevent the diseases that cause it. But Alzheimer’s Research UK’s cutting-edge research is accelerating progress towards a cure.
They have invested over £237 million since 1998, funding 1,275 research projects that build on our understanding of dementia and the diseases that cause it, taking us closer to the development of life-changing treatments.
Alzheimer’s Research UK have worked with scientists across 90 countries, producing over 5,000 scientific publications. Some of the amazing advances they have made include:
Developing dementia drugs, ensuring promising discoveries made in the lab are transformed into over 30 potential new dementia treatments right now.
Building our understanding of brain health and encouraging over 350,000 people to take the Think Brain Health Check-ins, helping to prevent more cases of dementia before they even start.
Identifying over 70 risk genes that are linked to Alzheimer’s disease, opening up crucial avenues for drug discovery.
Transforming detection of the diseases that cause dementia, particularly through the The Blood Biomarker Challenge, giving us the best chance of stopping these diseases before they take hold.
Throughout 2026 the BetterGov team will focus our fundraising efforts on supporting this life-changing research, with the hope that one day the heartbreak of dementia will become a thing of the past.
